Hooking Up With Dave

installation for Nuit Blanche 2018

September 29th 2018, 7:02pm - 7:02am

NO Foundation 1082 Queen Street West

"I was asked to create a sight specific installation on the top floor of a building in New York’s Chinatown, in a space that had been used for nothing more than storage for decades. The raw and dismal space seemed very likely to be an apartment soon in Manhattan’s tight real estate market so I thought l would create a dream 70’s bachelor pad. I had a blank slate to do what I always wanted to do.
A fire place and a tiger skin rug were the first essential ingredients and as it were, I was not going to buy these things, I had to make them...
YouTube has become the go-to instruction manual for everything from setting the clock on the VCR to how to renovate your kitchen. With the need and impulse to create a tiger skin rug for an imagined swing pad, I studied techniques for making Hook Rugs.
Out of these influences came a project which began to resemble and parallel the life of a once aspiring artist who had turned his attention to a dopey obsession and who, in order to justify and create value for his squandered time, has decided to « spread the knowledge « and make YouTube videos sharing his new preoccupation."-David Kramer, 2018

Hooking Up with Dave... is a video/hook rug installation first exhibited at LMAK Gallery in 2016. David Kramer plays the role of Dave, the antihero who wants to teach and share his techniques. As they say in the business, those who can’t do teach. Well Dave can do hook rugs but he unfortunately cannot teach.
