MULHERIN is pleased to present NOCTURNE EARSHOT CLOCK ERROR, new works by Cindy Ji Hye Kim and Keiran Brennan-Hinton in a two-person exhibition at our Toronto gallery opening Thursday, February 9th and running until Sunday, February 26th. Both Canadian artists are recent graduates of the prestigious Yale MFA program.

Cindy Ji Hye Kim's recent body of work explores the act of looking performed between the viewer and the image. Playing with pictorial depth and visual symbols through a series of drawings, Kim is interested in stepping in and out of the picture as an observer, a voyeur, and an witness. Kim utilizes the visual language of cartoons to simplify and generalize shapes, reconstructing body parts and objects into instruments of vision and deception. Sight becomes a performative gesture in her work; a silent expression of violence and fantasy that heightens various degrees of power the viewer exercises before an image.

For Keiran Brennan Hinton, painting exists in solitude. Slowing the experience of looking, it becomes a way to practice attention, a way to translate time through observation.....it rewards awareness and self-perception.

In order to see his small paintings, you lean in. Similar to the experience of reading a book, you extend the limits of your self in order to engage with a fiction. It is a moment of intimacy and calm that rewards solitude and introspection. A painting becomes a piece of frozen time, suspended in a moment solidified by the past.
