WHILE I WAS AWAY
August 17 - 27, 2017
Reception: Sunday, August 27, 2-5 pm
"While I Was Away is an exhibition about landscape, foress, interior design, obsessive compulsive mark making and memories of youth. Most of the painting in this exhibition was started when I was in my teens or early twenties. Last summer I returned to my hometown of Wiarton, ON to renovate my family's former home in the hopes of selling it.
I discovered was that I was totally inspired to paint again using the works I had made in my youth as underpainting and to recycle some of the ideas and techniques that had initially made me fall in love with painting. I had not painted for over 25 years and through the painting of the walls for the renovation of my family home; I discovered that I missed painting.
My Mother's aesthetics, Tom Thompson and The Group of Seven, the natural world, impressionism, pointillism and the colour and forms of the landscape of southern Georgian Bay all play key roles as inspiration and content for While I Was Away. The change of seasons also inspired many of these works.
It was a heady time for me to rediscover this passion and I wanted to preserve the essence and emotion of the home and the area where I grew up in ways that were not necessarily self-evident employing abstract and decorative devices to do so. Being at my family home without any of the familial dysfunction was surprisingly calm and allowed me to see the beauty of it and its surrounding landscape.
While I Was Away is a merging of past and present." - AH 2017
