NICK BIERK : PAINTINGS: JUNE 8 -JULY 2, 2017
"Portraiture has been a constant in my painting practice. It was exposed to me at a young age by my late father, David Bierk, through his own practice and through the artists he loved and admired. Additionally, he instilled in me a strong desire to let the studio be a place to play, explore and fail. Because of this my work jumps around in terms of its subject matter and execution, yet remains connected by a dotted line that leads back to him."-Nick Bierk
“If David had a fault, it was to be too good at too many things, never denying his constantly burgeoning curiosities long enough to focus on any one thing. In the maelstrom of his creative energies, his boys found their own moorage, and Nick, I think, fastened onto his father’s interest in precedent, history, and the myriad ways painting can be made.” - Excerpt from exhibition catalogue AFTER, text by Murray Whyte
Nick Bierk (b 1985) grew up in Peterborough Ontario. He studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. Bierk lives and works in Toronto and has exhibited his work in Canada and the United States.
