ROBERT HENGEVELD: SUCKING ON A TWO BY FOUR: JUNE 17-JULY 16, 2016

The title of the exhibition, sucking on a two-by-four, references our innate desire to pursue Nature – a walk in the local park, the pilgrimage to the cottage, or the plant on the window sill. This is contrasted by the conflicting reality that an authentic nature untouched by humankind does not exist. All has been shaped or modified in some way.

This tension between our interest in being around the natural environment and our disconnect from it manifests itself within our daily surroundings, from the red plastic lumber embossed with woodgrain to the garden rock with embedded speaker or light. The works within this exhibition explore the limitations to which these natural standins can be taken. The cluster of chrome plated forms with flashing lights resemble the generic boulder as much as they do a highly evolved disco ball. This is accompanied by a series of paintings on paper which provide the patterns necessary to fabricate small rocks.
